How to Make Your Performance Appraisals Motivational
Are you making the most of your people?
Performance appraisal is one of the tools you can use to do this.
Performance appraisal helps organisations to achieve their business goals, identify training needs and career potential. It also helps to motivate individuals, build relationships and improve communication.
How to make your performance appraisals motivational is a one day training programme.
- It can be tailored to meet the specific needs of your organisation and run inhouse for all those involved in the appraisal process
- I can provide you with the trainer notes, handouts, activities and slide presentation to run the programme yourself
- I also run it as an open course so if you only have one or two individuals who need this training this may be the answer
Whichever option give me a call on 07770977255 to discuss
Here are the programme objectives:
Objective
- identify the structure of an effective performance appraisal
- explain the techniques required to conduct an effective performance appraisal
- write smart objectives
- practice these skills in scenarios relevant to you

- writing objectives
- learning & development needs
- self appraisal
- structuring the meeting
- role plays
Here is a sample of the trainer notes for the preparation stage of the programme:
Before the meeting can take place it is important to prepare. In this session we will discuss what to prepare and the collecting of evidence. There will also be an activity.
Q Why is it important to prepare
Q What does it tell the team member if you haven't prepared
- if you fail to plan you will plan to fail. Preparation is vital to the success of the meeting and with a performance appraisal meeting there is no excuse for failing to prepare properly as it is intiated by you.
Let's now identify what preparation you need to make in advance and to do this we will use an activity.
Activity
In groups discuss this question:
- as an appraiser what preparations will you need to make in advance of the meeting
Put your replies on a flip chart and elect a spokesperson to present. You have 15 minutes to do this.
Presentations
Let's now summarise what we need to prepare prior to the performance appraisal
- review any previous review
- review performance against criteria
- assess objectives if set
- collect examples showing strengths and weaknesses
- plan some questions
- complete review form
- identify possible learning and development needs
- consider objectives to be set
- brief team member
- schedule time and date
- organise venue
Q What period of time are you reviewing performance over
- this will depend upon the organisation
